Roberto Capucci Exhibit at the Philadelphia Art...
Today my mom and I went to see the Italian designer, Robert Capucci, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I had never heard of him before today. I have seen a lot of fashion exhibits in museums in Philadelphia and at the MET in NYC but this may be one of my favorite exhibits so far. Capucci is a leader in Italian high fashion and is known for his use of colors, materials and silhouettes. His work...

Black and White Film
In high school, I took a summer course developing black and white film and forgot how much I loved it! For this assignment, we had to produce 8 8X10 images depicting motion, light, shadows, pattern, texture, repetition, and two other things that I cannot remember. These are my photos:
This final photo was my favorite. Our next assignment was to select a photo from this collection...
Pinhole pictures
I finally have my pinhole pictures back. So everyone can see what a pinhole camera is…
You put photopaper in the can (while in a darkroom so the paper isn’t exposed to light) and then place your camera in front of the object you want to take a picture of. The thing that looks like an eye is the lense- there is a small hole that lets the light in. The light then produces the image on...

Intro to Photography
I have decided to turn this blog into a blog for my photography class. After trying to get into Denison’s Intro to Photography class every semester since freshmen year, I am finally in it. I just handed in my first project which was done with a pinhole camera. The type of pinhole camera we used was literally just an empty paint can with a small hole poked into it, with a piece of photo paper...

Home
I made it home safely and luckily with no delays unlike most of the people trying to get home right now. I am experiencing extreme culture shock, who would have thought this would happen coming home and not going to Spain?!
I am currently in Maine where I have lots of downtime so I am working on editing my pics to put on here!
This is it...
Two presentations, four research papers, and four exams later… I have one more exam left and three days. I have been running on an average of 4 hours of sleep a night and have been living it up as much as I can during exam week- maybe more than I should be =] But it pays off because last night I went to a party for Granada Insider, a magazine here for tourists, with our program director and...
The Final Stretch
I just got back from the most incredible 5 days of my life in Morocco. We saw 7 cities in that time and each and every one of us had amazing experiences. But actually, it was life changing and unlike anything I have ever experienced before. Unfortunately, I will not be able to blog about it until I return home on December 19th because in my last 10 days in Granada I have to hand in 4 research...

Día Andaluz del pueblo Gitano
Día Andaluz del Pueblo Gitano was the day of the gypsies in Andalusia. I went with a friend of mine to do observations of the gitanos for our final project. There were two speakers who I didn’t pay attention to because I was observing the people and it ended with a flamenco show. I absolutely love flamenco. Something interesting is that everyone always considers flamenco to be a Spanish...
Día de acción de gracias
Día de acción de gracias: Spanish style.
Thanksgiving was interesting to say the least. IES did all that they could to make us feel at home. They arranged a game of fútbol Americano which was a blast and then a dinner for us all.
Fútbol Americano at the university, look at the amazing background
Just a casual ancient mosque next to the field, completely normal.
After the game, I did some...
Jerez
After leaving Cádiz, we drove to Jerez. Here we saw an incredible Andalusian horse show at Yeguada de Cartuja and went to a wine tasting at Bodega González-Byass. It was by far one of my favorite days of my time in Spain, it was filled with horses and wine- how could it not be?
Yeguada de Cartuja is the most famous place for breeding Andalusian horses. This became obvious the second I set foot on...
Cádiz
This past weekend we went to Cádiz, a beach town about three hours from Granada. After getting off the bus to a nice warm temperature and settling into Hotel Spa Senator Cádiz, we walked to the Catedral where we went to the top of the tower and into the crypt.

Visita de Español y visita de arte
My Spanish class decided to take a two hour field trip one morning. We started out at Café Fútbol at 8:30 where we at churros y chocolate, a popular Spanish food. I normally enjoy eating them but the last thing I want to eat at 8:30 am is churros y chocolate.
We had thought that we were going to hang out at Café Fútbol all morning but our crazy Spanish teacher Fabiola (she is actually crazy)...
Copenhagen, Denmark for SENSATION
I traveled all the way to Copenhagen, Denmark for the biggest, most famous, 9 hour, white clothes only, European techno rave with 30,000 other people to celebrate life. My life is awesome.
http://www.sensation.com/
Most other IES Granada people went only for sensation but I wanted to actually see the city if I was going all the way there. Luckily, there are a ton of Denison people studying...
Generalife: Alhambra visita privada 3
Built in the 13th century, Generalife more or less translates to “garden of the leader.” It is a place for the Sultán to escape from the palaces in the Alhambra to relax. Generalife is filled completely with airy gardens, fountains, small pools, fruit trees, and places for the Sultán to relax.
View of the Alhambra from Generalife
Patio de la Acequia- where the Sultán would come...
Barcelona con mi Madre
My wonderful mother came to visit me in Spain! Our trip began with me meeting her in Barcelona, one of my favorite cities, for the weekend before she came to Granada. We got to see so much of Barcelona in the three days that we were there.
Antoni Gaudi’s works infiltrate the city. Gaudi was a famous Spanish architect with an innate sense of geometry, volume, and creativity. All of his works...
Visita Privada de la Alhambra #2
This time we got to see the insides of the Palacios Nazarí. This is the part of the Alhambra where the kings lived.
Ceiling decoration
New technique- covering the columns with mosaic
The midget sized doors we had to crawl through to get to the cupola room
This photo is of the outside of the copula. This copula is called the Cúpula de Solo del Trono. It was built in the beginning of...
Edimburgo, Escocia
I know I am super behind with my blog- sorry! I have been gone the last three weekends and when I am not catching up on work, I have been trying to get a little bit of sleep.
Anyway, Halloween weekend I went to Edimburgo, Escocia (Edinburgh, Scotland) to see my friend Anna. It was unbelievable. I kept catching myself saying “this is not real life.” It looks straight out of a Harry...
Visita Privada de la Alhambra #1
The other week my art history class got to go on a private tour of the Alhambra. We were allowed special entry into rooms and entire buildings that are not open to the public. Some of the rooms literally have not been touched and don’t have any lights in them. The Alhambra personnel had to go into the rooms before we got there and open up the doors to let the bats out. Our tour guide had a...

I know I am behind so I analogize! I had midterms the last two weeks and just got back from 5 days in Scotland visiting my friend Anna from school anddd mom is coming in just two days! I will post again when I finally have a free moment.

Mezquita
Friday morning my Islamic Civilization class had a field trip to the Mezquita (mosque) in the Albayzín. It was quite an adventure. One great thing about abroad classes in Spain is that you don’t have class on Fridays. So, this was the first check on the con list for this field trip.
If we were to walk to the Mezquita, it would take a solid hour and its pretty much all uphill. We took María...
Última Clase de Cocinar
For our final cooking class, we made pollo y patatas (chicken and potatoes) and magdalenas (muffins). Except, we got there and Javíer had already cooked the pollo y patatas so we just got to make the muffins.
Even though this was my 4th cooking class I still wasn’t used to using a scale to measure amounts of sugar and flour instead of measuring cups.
Ours looked a little chunky / thick...
Córdoba
This past Friday IES took us to Córdoba which was the capital of an Islamic caliphate in the Middle Ages. On the way to Córdoba we stopped at Madinat-al-Zahra which was the city and palace built outside of Córdoba. It is also one of the most important archeological sites in Spain.
After touring the Madinat-al-Zahra we got back on the bus and made our way to Córdoba
Inside a random Synagogue we...
Techno Rave
Yes, I know I am way behind on blogging…
Last Monday a group of us went to a techno rave. A bus picked us up from a botellon (drinking park where Spanish people hang out) in Granada and we were off. Here was the page for the event:

There were about six large rooms with different DJ’s...
Madrid
This past weekend a group of us set off for a weekend in Madrid. I met my friend Hannah at the bus station- which I literally sprinted to after getting off my bus there that was about 30 mins late- and we were off. The ride was 5 hours long but didn’t seem that bad. We arrived to out hostel around 11pm thursday night. Since it was a holiday weekend there were only real hostels left. Meaning,...
Visita de Arte- Baños árabes y el Albayzín
This past week we went to some Arab baths and a walk through the Albayzín to see some of the old entrances into Granada.
In these Arab baths, there were four main rooms. The first was where you would undress and put on small shoes. The second was the hot bath room. The third was the warm water room. The fourth was the cold water room.
Walk through the Albayzín
This was the first Mezquita...
Adventures with Hannah
I know I am behind in blogging so I apologize.
Last Sunday, my friend Hannah and I decided that we wanted to explore. So, we met up at Parque de Frederico Garcia Lorca (I have posted pictures from here before) and Parque de Ciencias.
Parque de Frederico Garcia Lorca:
Parque de Ciencias: We went to the top of a tower there that had amazing views of Granada

Clase de Cocinar 3: Lentejas con Chorizo y...
On Monday we had our third cooking class, sadly there is only one left after this! On the menu for today was Lentejas con Chorizo (lentil soup with sausage) and Torrijas (basically fried french toast dipped in sugar)
This week we didn’t get to participate much. Why? I don’t know. But I was starving so I was fine with watching Javíer cook and then being served free food. He made all...
Mercado
Today, MC took Hilary and I to the markets in our neighborhood. We woke up at 9:30 and left by 10, MC doesn’t like the heat or crowds so she wanted to beat both. It was only about a 10 min walk. The markets were great, there were lots of really poorly made clothes but there were also lots of good finds. Earlier this week I went shoe shopping and tried on a bunch of ankle boots but I...
Huelga General
So, this past Wednesday there was huelga general which is a general strike that all of Spain participated in. I still really have no idea what the point of it was but basically every worker didn’t go to work. In Granada it was pretty chill, workers just marched down the street with flags and banners. In Barcelona, however, it was a violent strike. Stores that stayed open had their windows...

Clase de Cocinar 2
This week at cooking class we made Tortilla Española which is like quiche / omelet fusion and Buñuelos which are like funnel cake balls
Here are the ingredients and instructions
The tortilla is really easy, you cook papas (potatoes) and beat some huevos (eggs) and stir it all up.
Making the buñelos is also really easy, I didn’t make the batter, my team was the entree this week, but...
Field Trip 1: Sevilla y Ronda
This past weekend IES took us to Sevilla (Seville), which is the capital of Andalicia, and to Ronda. We left bright and early, at 7:45 am for our 2 1/2 hour bus ride to Sevilla.
Sevilla
Upon arriving we made our way to Reales Alcázares which is an area with lots of beautiful gardens and lots of buildings whose name and history I didn’t catch because I was too busy taking pictures and...
Alhambra con Hilary
Hilary and I decided that after class on Thursday we wanted to go and explore the Alhambra. The Alhambra is the most important thing in Granada. It is a palace and a fortress complex made in the mid 14th century by the Moorish rulers of the Emirate of Granada (wikipedia). It is Spain’s most significant and well known Islamic architecture and one of the main points of study in my art and...
Clase de Cocinar
Believe it or not- I signed up for a cooking class at La Escuela de Cocinar with Javíer Vílichez who apparently is pretty well known. Pretty much everyone that knows me knows that my cooking skills don’t exist. So, I figured- why not learn while in Spain? I went in expecting it to be like a normal cooking class where each person has their own station but to my dismay, I got there and there...
Nerja por el fin de semana
A large group of us decided to go to Nerja, a beach about 2 hours away, for the weekend. En route, I ran into Steve Broll! He is an old high school friend of mine who I haven’t seen in a long time. Apparently he is in Granada for the semester too, small world!
We arrived in Nerja and checked into Hostal Abril which ended up being an incredibly nice hostal. Max, Hilary, Christina, and I...
Plaza Bib-Rambla y La Alahmbra
El 16 de Septiembre
For my Islamic art and architecture class, we get to on a field trip every week. Since we don’t have class this upcoming week, we went to two this past week- to Plaza Bib-Rambla which is right in el centro, and La Alhambra which is the most important site in all of Granada.
Granada is filled with Muslim history. What fascinates me about the Muslim works of art is that...
Bienvenidos a España!
Adios Los Estados Unidos, Hola España! Packing was a huge nightmare. Finny wanted to come with..
