Roberto Capucci Exhibit at the Philadelphia Art Museum

Today my mom and I went to see the Italian designer, Robert Capucci, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I had never heard of him before today. I have seen a lot of fashion exhibits in museums in Philadelphia and at the MET in NYC but this may be one of my favorite exhibits so far. Capucci is a leader in Italian high fashion and is known for his use of colors, materials and silhouettes. His work truly is art. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed but here are some images from Google ( I take no credit for these photos). Black and White Film

In high school, I took a summer course developing black and white film and forgot how much I loved it! For this assignment, we had to produce 8 8X10 images depicting motion, light, shadows, pattern, texture, repetition, and two other things that I cannot remember. These are my photos:

This final photo was my favorite. Our next assignment was to select a photo from this collection and blow it up to a 16 X 20 and I chose this one. It was a very difficult picture to do in that it involved a lot of “burning” and “dodging” where you mainipulate the light exposed to your paper for different amounts of time. This way, you add more light to a speficic spot by “burning” or use less light in a specific spot by “dodging”. I used this technique on the majority of my photos but this one took the most work.

Pinhole pictures

I finally have my pinhole pictures back. So everyone can see what a pinhole camera is…

You put photopaper in the can (while in a darkroom so the paper isn’t exposed to light) and then place your camera in front of the object you want to take a picture of. The thing that looks like an eye is the lense- there is a small hole that lets the light in. The light then produces the image on the paper. Each one of my photos took about 5 mins to take.

Intro to Photography

I have decided to turn this blog into a blog for my photography class. After trying to get into Denison’s Intro to Photography class every semester since freshmen year, I am finally in it. I just handed in my first project which was done with a pinhole camera. The type of pinhole camera we used was literally just an empty paint can with a small hole poked into it, with a piece of photo paper inside. You place the paint can in front of the object you want to take a picture of and the light comes through the hole and the image is captured on the photo paper. Pretty amazing. The simplicity is beautiful. Our teacher wanted to take us back to the real basics of taking a photo and we got some amazing photos out of it. I was really proud of mine and got some of the best photo critiques from my classmates. I had to hand in the photos to the professor but ones I get them back I will post them on here. I’m excited to see how creative I can get and what I can learn from this taking this class!

I made it home safely and luckily with no delays unlike most of the people trying to get home right now. I am experiencing extreme culture shock, who would have thought this would happen coming home and not going to Spain?!

I am currently in Maine where I have lots of downtime so I am working on editing my pics to put on here!

Two presentations, four research papers, and four exams later… I have one more exam left and three days. I have been running on an average of 4 hours of sleep a night and have been living it up as much as I can during exam week- maybe more than I should be =] But it pays off because last night I went to a party for Granada Insider, a magazine here for tourists, with our program director and made some great connections. If / when I come back this summer, I have a place to rent with a great funny British woman and a possible internship with a wedding planner. Going out night before my art history exam definitely paid off! I am cramming as much as I can into the next few days and packing my bags in between. See you soon Amuurrrica!

The Final Stretch

I just got back from the most incredible 5 days of my life in Morocco. We saw 7 cities in that time and each and every one of us had amazing experiences. But actually, it was life changing and unlike anything I have ever experienced before. Unfortunately, I will not be able to blog about it until I return home on December 19th because in my last 10 days in Granada I have to hand in 4 research papers, give 2 presentations, and take 5 exams…. and check a few last things off my bucket-list. It is going to be a crazy final stretch. I am ready to go home and see family and friends but I am nowhere near being ready to leave Granada. Ideal situation: no finals, papers, or presentations, go home for a few weeks, and come right back here. Wish me luck, hasta pronto!

Día Andaluz del pueblo Gitano

Día Andaluz del Pueblo Gitano was the day of the gypsies in Andalusia. I went with a friend of mine to do observations of the gitanos for our final project. There were two speakers who I didn’t pay attention to because I was observing the people and it ended with a flamenco show. I absolutely love flamenco. Something interesting is that everyone always considers flamenco to be a Spanish dance which is true, but no one acknowledges its origin. Flamenco is the dance of the gypsies. Flamenco is not only a specific type of dance but has its own singing and guitar too. Often, I see gypsies in the street singing and playing flamenco on their guitars. Flamenco is not just this but it is a way of life for those who participate in it. In Granada it is said that those who dance, sing, and play flamenco have it in their blood. The facial expressions of those in a flamenco show are expressions I had never seen before coming here- their faces are completely filled with passion, they are not only signing, dancing, and playing flamenco but they are flamenco- it runs through their veins and takes over their body. Flamenco shows are truly amazing to watch

Unfortunately I just had my small camera and the picture quality is not great. I also have videos but they won’t load for some reason, I will try again later!

Día de acción de gracias: Spanish style.

Thanksgiving was interesting to say the least. IES did all that they could to make us feel at home. They arranged a game of fútbol Americano which was a blast and then a dinner for us all.

After the game, I did some Thanksgiving shopping, had a quick skype date with my family and the Wilsons, and then went home to get ready for dinner.

Not everyone would get in the pic, Mom, Susan, Erin, Claire, and the puppies are missing. Keller was ready in her super sexy robe of course.

Dinner was held in Hotel Corona which was very nice.

I really don’t even know what to say with this one other than we were all shocked. The enormous slab of turkey had some sort of sweet sauce on it, had some surprise spicy stuffing, and there were fried potato ball things on the side.

Even though the food was really bad, it was still a lot of fun to be with everyone. There are over 100 students at IES so we are never all together at one time. It was nice that almost all of the students and a lot of the teachers were there to celebrate Thanksgiving together.

After leaving Cádiz, we drove to Jerez. Here we saw an incredible Andalusian horse show at Yeguada de Cartuja and went to a wine tasting at Bodega González-Byass. It was by far one of my favorite days of my time in Spain, it was filled with horses and wine- how could it not be?

Yeguada de Cartuja is the most famous place for breeding Andalusian horses. This became obvious the second I set foot on the property- the facilities and the horses were absolutely gorgeous. http://www.yeguadacartuja.com/

This rider was unbelievable. My friend Chelsea and I talked to him after the show and he told me that he trained at the Royal school for 5 years and he has 15 horses at this facility. Hopefully when we come back after graduation we can come back and ride.

Cádiz

This past weekend we went to Cádiz, a beach town about three hours from Granada. After getting off the bus to a nice warm temperature and settling into Hotel Spa Senator Cádiz, we walked to the Catedral where we went to the top of the tower and into the crypt.

To end our paseo we walked through the center where I found some little girls doing hop skotch, of course some of us joined.

I really enjoyed my time in Cádiz. It was an adorable beach town with lots of great shops and friendly people. It felt really safe and everything was well lit at night. The only thing that I regret is that I never had time to go to the beach! So unlike me, I know. But it was a great trip!

My Spanish class decided to take a two hour field trip one morning. We started out at Café Fútbol at 8:30 where we at churros y chocolate, a popular Spanish food. I normally enjoy eating them but the last thing I want to eat at 8:30 am is churros y chocolate.

We had thought that we were going to hang out at Café Fútbol all morning but our crazy Spanish teacher Fabiola (she is actually crazy) decided to take us on a hike. I have no idea where we went but we saw some cool graffiti on the way.

We then went to some gardens that were next to the Alhambra that Fabiola jumped some caution tape to get us to.

Later that day I had a trip for art history. We went to Palacio de Dar Al-Horra which is where the Sultán’s lover lived.

Then we went to a convent with cloistered nuns where we weren’t allowed to take pictures. It was a completely new change of scenery after having only going to Muslim buildings all semester, I almost forgot what Christian art looked like. After seeing Christian art all of my life and then seeing Muslim art all this past semester, I can saw that I like Muslim art a lot more. I think it is a lot more fascinating, aesthetically appealing, and less complicated.

The best part of this visit was that the nuns made us all magdalenas (cupcakes)!

Copenhagen, Denmark for SENSATION

I traveled all the way to Copenhagen, Denmark for the biggest, most famous, 9 hour, white clothes only, European techno rave with 30,000 other people to celebrate life. My life is awesome.

Most other IES Granada people went only for sensation but I wanted to actually see the city if I was going all the way there. Luckily, there are a ton of Denison people studying in Copenhagen for the semester so I crashed with my friends MK and Carly. Lots of other Denison people studying all over Europe flew in also: Emaline came from Italy, my roommate Sarah from Germany, and Courtney from England.

Copenhagen is completely picturesque and all of the houses are painted pretty neutral colors. The Danish accent is a lot different than I expected. It sounds like someone is speaking English with an American accent but it just mumbling. But when you actually listen the language is very similar to German… at least that’s what I thought.

After meeting MK at the airport, we went back to her place, made some good old mac and cheese (she has a dorm) and then headed across town to meet up with all of our friends.

Everyone was planning on going to a club after hanging out but MK and I decided to go back since we were both tired from traveling all day and wanted to be well rested for Sensation.

The next morning MK took me to the city center and to Stroget which is the longest walking street in Europe where all of the good stores are. We went to the oldest Danish place for breakfast which was amazing- I had a raspberry danish and MK got a rhubarb one. After breakfast, we walked down the Stroget and shopped. Not too long after we ran into Emaline, Sarah, Courtney, and Kelly who we got lunch with.

Before we knew it, we had to go back and get ready for Sensation! (We had to start getting ready around 2, leaving time to pre-party before Sensation started at 6). After getting dressed in our white outfits and applying glitter all over our bodies, MK and I headed across town again to meet up with everyone before going to the huge pre-party

Sensation was an absolutely unbelievable experience. I didn’t think I would be able to make it the entire time, but I did so I was pretty proud of myself. It was defiantly a memorable, once in a lifetime experience!

The next morning, we hung out in MK and Carly’s room for a while, made breakfast, watched tv, etc. After some pushing I got Carly to agree to take me on a tour of the city. Even though it was only 4:00, the sun was pretty much set.

We started our tour at the Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum. Not only is Carlsberg a popular beer but Carlsberg the person invented water purification- Copenhagen is known for its clean water.

We walked down along the water and back to Stroget (the walking street) to kings square where the royal opera house and hot dog stands were. Copenhagen has hot dog stands everywhere, even in the airport. I of course had to try one- hands down the best hot dog I have ever had.

We then went to Nyhavn which was absolutely adorable. Carly told me that it is the most photographed spot in Copenhagen. There are more pretty colored buildings, a harbor, there were lights on the trees, and since we are already close to Christmas- small booths were set up that were selling small Christmas goods.

On our walk back to the bus stop, we walked by Tivoli. Tivoli is the first amusement park ever. It is supposed to be really neat to go in, it has markets and shops, but unfortunately for me it was closed.

I 100% enjoyed my time in Copenhagen. It was great to see some friends from Denison who I haven’t seen since we left school in the spring. Hopefully I make it back here someday!
